LAN REEL

The LAN reel is a product developed by NTT for use in the office, school, home, or various places where cables and electrical cords are randomly scattered on the floor, under desks, or other pieces of furniture. The LAN reel is a flexible cable used for LAN, cable of expanding out several meters, like a vacuum cleaning cord. When the LAN reel is used, there is no need for code wiring.
The LAN reel is three meters, but provides one with ten meters of continuous cable capable of handling category 5 transmissions. By employing a special spring reel, there is no tangling of the cable. The use of a specially developed 2P-UPT, twisted pair flat cable allows category 5 transmissions.
The LAN reel has been developed at the request of Japanese universities for use in class rooms equipped with lan systems. Japanese office furniture makers, e.g., Itoki, Kokuyo, and Aichi, have manufactured desks installing the LAN reel inside the desk top.
With the increase of pc usage in homes, electronics stores in Tokyo have started to sell the LAN reel for home usage.
